Santorum Makes Excuses For His Wife’s Abortion

I know this is not a new story, but it needs to be emphasized as this blatantly hypocritical man rises in the GOP presidential process. Charles II of Mercury Rising points us to a version of the story by “ELLEN”  of “our silver blog” ,,, a not completely unsympathetic story, lacking sympathy mostly for Santorum’s and his wife’s hypocrisy. Once you read this, I think you will know how I feel about the matter.

As is so often the case in circumstances leading to abortion, the medical complications in Santorum’s wife Karen’s pregnancy were truly extreme… so extreme that Karen would almost certainly have died without intervention. The fetus was known to be so compromised by infection that it would not (and did not) live even a few hours. The Santorums have other children, who were in serious danger of being left without a mother… a mother whose death could be, and ultimately was, prevented.

You can read more details about the sequence of events in the linked blog post. One could… just barely… argue that the Santorums did not choose abortion, though that would be stretching the truth to the breaking point.

And now Santorum has apparently returned to his original position: abortion is never acceptable, even to save the life of the mother. Specifically, his campaign site says

… Rick was the author of legislation outlawing the heinous act known as partial-birth abortion and he championed the fight to pass the “Born Alive Infant Protection Act” and the “Unborn Victims of Violence Act.”

Such late-term abortions are almost never performed, and when they are, the purpose is always to save the mother’s life. Rick Santorum will allow that exception… for his own wife. Every other woman in that situation can just go die in agony as far as Ricky-boy is concerned.

All politicians lie. But not all politicians’ lies kill innocent people cruelly. Santorum rightly makes an exception for his wife… how is it not hypocrisy that he makes no similar exception for all other women?
