Christmas Eve?

TPM’s Nick R. Martin:

Longtime white supremacist and border vigilante JT Ready saw himself as part of a war that few others would fight. He amassed weapons. He donned a uniform. He formed his own brigade of volunteers to walk alongside him as he hunted what he described as “narco terrorists” flowing across the Arizona-Mexico border.

On Wednesday, reports out of Arizona said Ready died, not at the hands of drug runners, but with his own gun during a mad rampage inside a suburban home just east of Phoenix. Along the way, the reports said, he took the lives of four other people, including a toddler.

The Arizona Republic reported the victims were Ready’s girlfriend, her daughter, the daughter’s boyfriend and the daughter’s 18-month-old baby. Ready still somehow managed to use the event to blame immigrants even after his death. A posting on his Facebook page appeared hours after the massacre took place.

(Link to Ready’s Facebook page removed. Some things are just too grotesque to link to. If you want to see it… I don’t… the original article has the link.)

To Nutcase Rightwing Asswipe members, it’s just another day; it’s part of what guns are for.

To those of us concerned with the ease of obtaining high-capacity automatic firearms, concealed-carry permits without a serious background check, a waiting period and at least a cursory psychological stability exam by a professional shrink, we’re like kids on Christmas Eve who just learned that there’s no sanity clause.

Sorry; I couldn’t help myself.

I am honestly glad this guy is gone and that it was done by his own hand. I regret terribly, grieving for the innocent dead, that four other people including a toddler had to perish along with him. Surely there must have been some way in law of preventing this tragedy without infringing on legitimate… by which I mean sane… gun owners’ rights. Being certifiably psycho should be a legal disqualification for gun ownership. No other constitutionally protected right Americans enjoy is unregulated in law; firearm ownership should be regulated along with the rest of our rights.

Another Reason Not To Live In Louisiana

I was once offered a (probably) good job in Louisiana, but I turned it down. This kind of thing, reported by Jillian Rayfield of TPM, is one of the reasons:

The Sheriff’s Department in Bossier Parish, Louisiana announced a plan in 2010 to train local volunteers to use shotguns, riot gear and a .50-caliber machine gun mounted on what the sheriff called a “war wagon.” The program was part of “Operation Exodus,” a plan to prepare for a potential terrorist attack or local unrest in the area.

Though it may seem unlikely that Bossier Parish would ever have a need for a “war wagon,” this small town’s pursuit of a powerful, weaponized vehicle is just the tip of the (bullet-proof) iceberg, and reflects an increase in military-grade tanks sought after — and acquired — by local law enforcement departments across the country.

Since 9/11, the federal government has doled out around $34 billion in government grants for local police departments to beef up their security capabilities, according to a December report by the Center For Investigative Reporting. The effect of all of this money — often freely given and poorly regulated — is that local police forces have increasingly taken on a military edge.

Rayfield provides a picture of the vehicle, called a Lenco BearCat. A similar vehicle purchased by Fargo, ND is reported to cost $256,000. It looks like an armored car, but visibly has an LRAD on top. Again according to the article, it “can hold up to 15 officers, and has bulletproof exteriors and ballistic glass, gunports, roof hatches with rotating turrets and gun mount platforms.” And Bossier Parish is not the only place acquiring one of these things; read the article.

The whole war mentality about “terrorism,” which in the minds of some of these people is equivalent to what I call “peaceful protest,” is truly disgusting. Soon enough, in America, it won’t be safe to go outdoors… not because of the terrorists, but because of the cops. And for the privilege of being scared out of our wits, we’re paying $34 billion.

You’re Not Paranoid If They Really Are Out To Get You

Via ellroon, we read AlterNet’s Rania Khalek regarding 6 Creepy New Weapons the Police and Military Use To Subdue Unarmed People. These weapons, experience shows, are “nonlethal” only in theory… people, sometimes a lot of people, have died from being subjected to them. But our corporations are developing them, and our military and police are deploying them and sometimes actually using them, often on people who pose no violent threat whatsoever.

Do you ever get the feeling some people in America actually don’t like to see the practice of our fundamental First Amendment right of peaceable assembly? You do? Then you must be some sort of goddam commie fascist socialist… [/snark]

‘Happiness Is A Warm Gun’

NEWT! DON’T SHOOT! (TPM slideshow.)

And be careful with that ax in the second picture!

In my opinion, what Gingrich is holding in the first picture is probably more appropriate to a presidential assassin than a presidential candidate. I’m just sayin’…

AFTERTHOUGHT: who is worse… Newt, who likes to fire guns, or Mitt, who likes to fire people?

Pistol-Packin’ Perry

It’s amazing what Republicans (and even some Democrats) consider a qualification for an American president:

I mean, who knows… the preznit might be out ridin’ the range one day and come acrost some two-legged varmint that needs shootin’… hey, it’s a matter of pertectin’ the country; I’m sure it happened to Dub Bush at least two or three times…

Let me add, before I have to duck several loads of crap flung in my direction by the gun nuts… The Second Amendment as interpreted by a recent Supreme Court assures that Ricky-Boy has a right to own that thar fahr-arm, and I’m not about to say he doesn’t. But exactly who or what he’ll use it for from the Governor’s mansion in Austin, or from the White House, is a puzzlement to me… either place, there are plenty of people with much better guns ready to take on anyone who would put him in danger (other than himself, of course).
