SpaceX Dragon, Private Vehicle, To Begin ISS Mission April 30

Here’s a simulation of the mission. The objective of this first trip is minimal… docking with the International Space Station and delivering a mere 1200 pounds of payload:

Hey, we’re gonna party like it’s 1969!

Seriously, let’s hope this is a good beginning. America’s decision to allow the Shuttle program to expire without a suitable replacement (see this grand pic of Shuttle Discovery over the Smithsonian on what is presumed its last “flight” of any sort) has always seemed a mistake to me… but no one asked me. But hey, it’s the age of austerity (unless you’re as wealthy as Mitt), and SpaceX claims to be able to deliver humans to ISS on its Dragon vehicle for about half one-third the cost we’re paying Russia. All we can do now is hope for the best.
