Joe McCarthy Reincarnated In… Allen West? – UPDATED

I know, it seems improbable. But TPM’s Eric Kleefeld says the following, so it must be so:

At a campaign town hall event on Tuesday, the Palm Beach Post reports, West declared that he’s “heard” that up to 80 House Democrats are members of the Communist Party. However, he would not name any specific people.

Jeebus on a crutch, people! Why, in the 21st century, is there still an audience for this kind of BS?

To Rep. West: “Have you no sense of decency sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?

UPDATE: apparently, West’s “up to 80” Commies in the House are… you guessed it… the House Progressive Caucus. Hey, you may think his statement even more idiotic, but saying that got him into the headlines.

He’s copying McCarthy: Speaking before the Ohio County Women’s Republican Club in Wheeling, West Virginia, Senator McCarthy waved before his audience a piece of paper. According to the only published newspaper account of the speech, McCarthy said that, “I have here in my hand a list of 205 [State Department employees] that were known to the Secretary of State as being members of the Communist Party and who nevertheless are still working and shaping the policy of the State Department.” In the next few weeks, the number fluctuated wildly, with McCarthy stating at various times that there were 57, or 81, or 10 communists in the Department of State. In fact, McCarthy never produced any solid evidence that there was even one communist in the State Department.

In one amusing scene in the movie Good Night, and Good Luck, McCarthy is preparing a speech while eating dinner. He says something like, how many Communists work at the State Department? At that moment, his wife hands him a bottle of Heinz 57 sauce, and he proclaims, “Fifty-seven Communists work at the State Department!” I may have to rent that movie if it can be found; I need the inspiration.

West is certifiably crazy, but he is emblematic of a certain segment (and not a small one!) of the Republican Party in today’s America. I fear him, not because he makes sense or because he will become vice president, but because things in our glorious country are trending his way, not mine.

Hmm that is a bit rch given that the typical comunist party holds its annual congress in a phone booth nowadays

Shaun, the American Right has a longstanding obsession with the Commies. When I went in for my Army draft pre-induction physical (which I flunked), one of the questions they asked me… verbally, F2F, not on a paper form… was “Are you a Communist?” I’m not an enthusiast about any “-ism,” but damn, I’m not THAT stupid!

All these 45 years later, I guess I thought the McCarthy era was behind us, but noooo…
