Darrell Issa: The New Dan Burton

Like his predecessor as chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Dan Burton, the current chair Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) feels no compunction about running a committee in a wholly partisan manner. holding hearings on issues in which he allows only witnesses who share his side of the issue. In this case, his HOG‑Reform committee hearings are on Obama’s birth control regulations… and his witnesses include the chair of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, and… well, no one at all from Obama’s side, which is shared by an overwhelming majority of Americans. Here’s Sarah Posner of Salon, as linked above:

Eight out of nine of Issa’s witnesses are Orthodox Christian, Catholic and evangelical, and represent Christian institutions, one of which, Belmont Abbey College, has sued HHS over the contraception requirement. The sole exception is Rabbi Meir Soloveichik of Yeshiva University, an Orthodox rabbi who last week penned a Wall Street Journal Op-Ed with Cardinal Donald Wuerl, archbishop of Washington, and Watergate felon-turned prison evangelist Chuck Colson, claiming a united, ecumenical front against the contraception requirement. Wuerl, promoting dire slippery slope arguments, has compared the contraception mandate to the government requiring Catholic schoolchildren to watch pornography.

Now there’s government oversight for you: the oversight is that Issa omitted any possible witnesses favorable to the opposition. Your tax dollars pay for this asswipe to run this hearing, and if you happen to be a radical conservative Catholic or evangelical Christian or Jew… radical is the operative word… you’re getting your money’s worth. Good luck on being heard by this House committee if you’re not.

Issa is one of California’s most corrupt legislators—–no surprise there.

Issa has been a waste of space and oxygen for as long as I’ve followed his hostile, purposeless career as a congressman. I presume he’ll never lose his seat, unless he is caught in bed with a young boy. Say, maybe one of those priests could fix him up… nah. I don’t want to see kids harmed by him, or by priests.
