GOP Leadership Prepares Anti-Birth-Control Push; Party Schism Possible

Sometimes it’s hard to believe how radical the GOP has become in just the last decade or so. Here’s Sahil Kapur of TPM:

Congressional Republicans’ pledge to mount a legislative push against the Obama administration’s requirement that health insurance plans cover birth control comes with a risk: Alienating their members who have previously pushed or voted to mandate contraception coverage.

Back in 2001, six Republican senators sponsored legislation decreeing that health insurance plans may not “exclude or restrict benefits for prescription contraceptive drugs or devices approved by the Food and Drug Administration.” In other words, they would be required to provide birth control. The bill never made it out of committee, but that wasn’t for a lack of effort from the GOP.

This is not your grandfather’s Republican Party, or probably even your father’s, and certainly not the GOP of any women in your family. This is hardcore radical religious rightist political terrorism. If you’ve ever voted straight GOP or even split a ticket, now might be a good time to recognize what has become of that party, and stop sending them to Washington or your state legislatures.

Just the sight of a naked Santorum would insure preventative birth control.

MandT, 🙂 … I read tonight that PPP says Santorum is now the leader among GOP candidates… hard to believe, but apparently those are the numbers. Of course he will not become the candidate no matter how many caucuses he wins, but it is yet another sign of the downward spiral of the GOP.
