The Bad Guys Win Again: Gabrielle Giffords Announces Resignation

Eric Kleefeld of TPM has some details. In short, Giffords continues having medical problems including cognitive difficulties… hardly surprising for someone shot through the brain… and she needs to concentrate on recovery without the pressures of a congressional career.

At the time of her shooting a year ago this month, there was much discussion as to whether Republicans such as Sarah Palin, whose campaign rhetoric in 2008 was undeniably violent (“don’t retreat… reload!” and such), were in any way responsible for Giffords’s being shot. The consensus seemed to be that the fellow who shot her… yes, I know his name, and it will not appear in this post… was a seriously disturbed individual whose “hit list” was not specifically political in nature. Maybe not; maybe so… I don’t have any information about that.

But there is no way of denying the Republican connection to this incident: the Pima County, Arizona GOP subsequently raffled off a Glock 23, similar to the weapon with which Giffords was shot, as a fundraiser for a get-out-the-GOP-vote drive.

Some people are only just barely human. The then-chair of the Pima County GOP is one of those. If I believed in Hell, I’d wish him sent there.

But the real irony is that, because of the shooting, the GOP actually has a chance to win that House seat. The bad guys may indeed reap the rewards of this evil deed.

    What a terrible loss!

Indeed, Mad, it was. The idea that Republicans could mock a premeditated almost-deadly act against a Representative is, I think, a sign of our times. Sometimes, they’re not merely misguided people: they’re bad people.
