Occupy San Diego: Police Define ‘Irony’ For Us

From Crooks and Liars:

“Occupy San Diego” protesters who were arrested in an early morning raid in late October were detained for hours and forced to urinate and defecate in buses.

The San Diego Sheriff’s Department confirmed yesterday complaints from protesters who said that after the arrests, while being held for hours in county vans and buses that they were told to relieve themselves in the bus.

“The driving factor,” which led to the raid, was said to be unsanitary conditions in the park.

… as opposed to “unsanitary conditions in the [buses]’? And for that, police showed up in riot gear?

There seems to be considerable disagreement about what actually happened. I have to say, though, police do not help their case by denying arrestees access to a bathroom. Denying potty privileges is an irrational and even somewhat childish response; what else did they do that is irrational and childish?

I’m sure there could be a good lawsuit in the offing there. It must run counter to detention procedures.

What’s that you say, jams… a lawsuit in the offal?

The absurdity of police response seems only to grow. You’d think they’d figure out at some point that going in full riot gear to arrest people who are doing little more than occupying (literally) just makes them look bad. And forcing people to pee in the interior of a city bus is just uncivilized. But no, they spent taxpayers’ money on those shields, helmets, batons, etc., and they’re going to wear and wield them… even if only to confine protesters in a place with no restroom.

The police agencies in San Diego County have supplied an inordinate number of Supreme Court decisions about the treatment of people. They were militarized before it became popular in the rest of country.

The area also supplies and inordinate number of whacko Congresscritters, and rightwing terrorists to the country.

The Sheriff’s department launched a helicopter assault attack on a Democratic fund-raiser for being ‘too noisy’ out in the middle of nothing and nowhere.

This isn’t at all surprising. It is par for the course of their standard operating procedure.

Well, Bryan, I suppose there’s no need now for me to sing my question,

      ♫ Who… in the world… is… harmin’ San Diego? ♫
