You know it’s serious when Susie Tompkins Buell, a big-time Democratic fundraiser, successful businesswoman and founder of the Esprit clothing line, John Kerry’s fourth biggest fundraiser in 2004, major dollar supporter of Democracy Alliance and Media Matters, and “Hillary’s best friend,” literally protests in the middle of the street outside a big-dollar Obama fundraiser, against Obama’s actions regarding the Tar Sands Pipeline. Here’s FDL’s Teddy Partridge quoting from SF Gate:
“I don’t even know what he stands for,” said Susie Tompkins Buell, a co-founder of the Esprit clothing company and one of the most generous Democratic Party donors in the nation – instrumental in backing such powerhouse progressive organizations as the Democracy Alliance and Media Matters.
“I think this is a huge issue about our future, about the planet, not just America,” she said. “And he needs to be a leader … to have the awareness of it. To fight for it.”
And what’s it all about?
The Keystone XL pipeline, a proposed 1,700-mile underground conduit linking the tar-sand fields in Alberta, Canada, to Texas refineries.
… which is, no argument, possibly the dirtiest and most environmentally dangerous pipeline ever proposed.
You expect that kind of questioning of Obama from DFH bloggers and environmentalists like me. But from high-dollar fundraisers at the very top of the Democratic Party? Mr. Obama had better mend his ways “real soon now,” as the saying goes, or he’s going to find himself without funding to run for a second term.
Of course, there are those who say Obama has made his pile in one term and doesn’t need or want a second term; offhand I don’t believe that, but it is possible. If that is not true… if he wants to remain President Obama for another term… he had better give serious thought to the ways he is offending his top-ranked fundraisers.
