Boehner Triples Amount Of Contract With Private Law Firm To Defend DOMA

Ryan J. Reilly of TPM:

House Republican leaders have tripled the amount allocated for a legal team arguing in support of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) from $500,000 to $1.5 million of taxpayer money.

A modified contract between the General Counsel to the House of Representatives and former Solicitor General Paul Clement of Bancroft PLLC sets a cap of $750,000 which can be raised up to $1.5 million.

Several Democratic lawmakers have described Boehner’s act as “unconscionable,” and for lack of a better word, I agree: defending the indefensible, at taxpayers’ expense, is indeed unconscionable. This action is not merely a gross waste of taxpayers’ money: it’s using taxpayers’ money to do something that should never be done in the first place.

I just don’t understand it. As more and more Republicans come out as being gay, how can the Republican leadership vote to suppress their human rights? This is far beyond partisan maneuvering: this is just plain mean-spirited. And that is the nature of the GOP today.
