‘Occupy Wall Street’: NYPD Maces Penned Peaceful Female Protesters

Raw Story has the video. The video shows the protesters, apparently all women, doing nothing even remotely threatening. NYPD surrounds them, traps them in an orange flexible fence, then maces them.

Apparently, your right to “petition the government for a redress of grievances” is at an end, at least if your grievances are with the financial industry. And NYPD… I hate to say it, but it looks like they’re out of control.

UPDATE LATE MON. AFTERNOON: ellroon supplies an annotated video with arrows and captions to help you follow the actions of the officer who committed the mace attack, then calmly walked away while the protesters screamed in agony. ellroon points us to a commondreams.org report identifying the officer involved, who is alleged to be Deputy Inspector Anthony V. Bologna of the NYPD Patrol Borough Manhattan South. By rights, the officer in the video, whoever he is, should find his career is over. The police are supposed to prevent assault, not commit it. Please note that at no time in the course of the assault is any protester doing anything threatening.

They weren’t threatening anyone, but those women protesters were sure shrill…. Probably hurt the ears of Mr. Baloney and he just reflexively sprayed them full in the face. Had to walk all the way over from the other side of the street too.
