‘SuperDuperCongress’ – An End-Run Around New Deal Principles?

Marcy Wheeler comes to that conclusion.

You’ve all heard of the “SuperCongress,” the 12 members selected to force further unpalatable budget cuts on an unwilling Congress make further cuts to the budget required by the bargain Obama struck.

So what is Wheeler’s “SuperDuperCongress”? It’s a secret; you can’t ask! No, it’s a secret kept about as well as any political secret involving “about 25 centrists from both parties” could be kept, i.e., not at all, as soon as, e.g., Joe LIEberman saw personal advantage in disclosing it. I’ll follow Wheeler’s lead and simply quote the WaPo:

The private gathering this week, held Wednesday in a Capitol meeting room, included about 25 centrists from both parties. It was organized by Sens. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.) and Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), two members of the “Gang of Six,” which tried unsuccessfully to engineer a grand deal patterned loosely after the plan laid out by the deficit commission headed by former Clinton White House chief of staff Erskine Bowles and former senator Alan Simpson.

Oh, yeah, that’s what we need: another cabal within Congress, secretly aiming for cuts of not merely $1.5 trillion but instead $3 trillion, i.e., secretly undertaking things  no ordinary working American would remotely consider… if they were permitted to know about it, and if their own less anointed members of Congress could have any influence on it.

Can we just give up the pretense and admit that government “of the corporation, by the corporation and for the corporation” not only has not perished from the earth, but is firmly implanted in our own nation, in gangs of six, SuperCongresses of 12, and secret cabals of about 25? C’mon, admit it: American democracy is defunct; <snark> long live American fascism. </snark> 😡

Wheeler concludes:

Frankly, I’m not sure what to make of SuperDuperCongress. It seems like a bunch of Democrats have decided to pre-empt Obama’s push for jobs, but also try an end-run around those Democrats in the House who still believe in the New Deal and the Democratic Party’s legacy.

Yep. So much for “pivoting” to jobs!

It’s as clear as that….Democracy ends with a committee meeting.
