House Passes Boehner’s Bill, Senate Promptly Kills It

Brian Beutler of TPM talks about what may come next, and details the Senate’s 59-41 rejection. A series of procedural moves, first in the Senate and then in the House, on a bill that is only nominally “Boehner’s bill” with its guts stripped and replaced with Reid’s changes, is what the House will vote on. Things are a long way from certain at this point. At the very least, if the House kills the bill now, even the biggest lamebrain in America should be able to see which party shoulders the blame. But first we have to see the required series of votes.

They are going to the reconciliation route to avoid amendments. A reconciled bill has to get an up or down vote.

I hope Reid thinks to include Pelosi in his plans, because she can obviously control the Democratic caucus when she wants to, and Boehner can’t control House Republicans.

Bryan, I just took a look (Sat. night about 10pm) and I couldn’t even begin to hazard a guess where this will go. Reid has delayed his test vote until tomorrow; Kerry let slip that the Dem objections have something to do with triggers that would unleash drastic cuts without any corresponding additional revenue… and frankly I object to that, too; in fact, I question the wisdom of triggers of any sort. But we may as well grab ourselves a beer and settle in; this will not go smoothly or quickly.
