After Senate Victory, Gay Marriage Awaits Governor Cuomo’s Signature

LGBT persons in the great State of New York will finally have the right they should have had all along… the right to marry their gay partners. The bill Cuomo is to sign carves out some exceptions for certain religious organizations that perform marriages, but I foresee a large number of LGBTs flocking to, e.g., UU churches, or perhaps just going to whatever hall of records New York has for such documentation and filing the necessary papers.

You talk about equality… now New York gays can experience the joys and the “joys” of marriage right along with straight people! 😈

AFTERTHOUGHT: my wonderful readers compiled the following list of occupations that will be glad of the new law:

  • divorce lawyers,
  • wedding planners,
  • florists,
  • caterers,
  • anyone with a reception room to rent,
  • bridal shops,
  • tux rentals,
  • court clerks throughout the state,
  • and in some cases, musicians, both soft music for the ceremony and loud music for the reception.

I’m extra proud of my home state right now.

Of course, gays aren’t the only ones rejoicing this weekend.

    So are divorce lawyers. 🙂

And wedding planners, and florists, and caterers, and anyone with a reception room to rent, and bridal shops, and tux rentals, and court clerks throughout the state.

This is a stimulus package in addition to a civil rights win.

The Puritans should never have permitted churches to get involved in the wedding business. People seem to miss that the only legal part religion plays in weddings in the US is as witnesses to the contract. The Puritans held out for decades, but finally caved to the pressure.

… and in some cases, musicians, both soft music for the ceremony and loud music for the reception. Of course the photos last night of Stonewall didn’t record the sound, but I have a feeling it was anything but quiet!

Marriage is a civil institution only because of the need to distribute property in the event of death, and a religious institution only for religions that feel a need to control their adherents’ love lives. Some of us do fine by dispensing with both aspects. 😉 The only church of which I was ever a full-fledged member was part of the UUA; they started having openly gay and lesbian ministers in the mid-Sixties and started marrying LGBT people less than a decade after that. So it’s old stuff for us… but still very welcome. Equality encompasses everyone, or it’s a sham.
